I am chagrined to find that there are absolutely NO DONKEYS in Donkey Kong. My Bad.
I also failed to include "Get Behind The Mule" AND Shirley Ceasar's gospel number "Hold My Mule."
First, let's let Charles Hodgson 'splain exactly what "mule" means.
To atone for posting Whiteboy Slim yesterday I tracked down Taj Mahal's version of "She Took The Caty ANd Left Me A Mule To RIde."
Next, I have Stringbean. Chances are you don't know who Stringbean is. David Akeman, known as Stringbean, was a musical comedian and a staple of the old Grand Ole Opry. He started his career as a banjo player for Bill Monroe and later worked with Uncle Dave Macon. He is known to my generation primarily as the guy on Hee Haw who was always reading the letters from home. Here he performs "I'm The Man Who Rode The Mule Around the World."
And bringing up the rear we have a few more:
- Some art rock from Malicorne, "Le Mule." (which makes me think of Pepe Le Pew)
- A funky folk protest song from Oscar Brown, Jr., "Forty Acres And A Mule."
- Shimon's "Drug Mule" which I realize is not about a 4-legged mule, but maybe WBM will let me slide on this one...
- Grand Belial's Key's "On A Mule Rides A Swindler" about which I frankly don't know what to think.
- Arthur Collins and Byron G. Harlan historic recording of "The Mule Song."
- And a live version of Phish doing "The Scent of a Mule."
Today is Donkey Wednesday and it's Animal Week on Mp3eme. That means one thing and one thing only: A BIG-ASS DONKEY POST!
We shall start with the Ignatz theme song: "Soul Donkey" by the Sugarman Three.
Next, it's probably the most well-known donkey in a song: the one in the Who's "Happy Jack."
I have three more songs 'bout donkeys:
Mochipet's "Disko Donkey,"
Buckner & Garcia's "Do the Donkey Kong," and BOAT's "I'm A Donkey For Your Love."
As everyone who's ever read the Stockman's Handbook knows, when you cross a jack (male) donkey with a female horse you get... anybody???
A MULE
(Extra credit points to anyone who knows what you get when you cross a jennet (female) donkey with a stallion.)
Let's start the mule portion of our post by listening to Tennessee Ernie Ford totally annihilate Bing Crosby in a "Mule Train" showdown.
Whitewater Ramble's "Pack Mule Blues," Deep Purple's "The Mule," Coley Jones' "Army Mule In No Man's Land." some guy named "Whiteboy Slim" covering the classic "She Took The Caty and Left Me A Mule," and The Magic Numbers' "The Mule."
Don't tell the animals, but somehow a muleskinner sneaked in: Bill Monroe And His Blue Grass Boys's "Mule-skinner Blues."
There's actually ANOTHER Zevon monkey song, "Leave My Monkey Alone" from Sentimental Hygiene. If anybody out there has it, post it baby!
Next we have some old skool monkey music: Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "Mickey's Monkey," and-- since the mere mention of a monkey is all we require now-- Nat King Cole's "Straighten Up And Fly Right."
(to the left)
2 Barenaked Ladies: "If I had $1,000,000" and "Another Postcard"
and 2 Dave Matthews: "What Would You Say?" and "Proudest Monkey" Besides the "Proudest Monkey" there is also XTC's "The Smartest Monkeys"
OK, two-- count them-- 2 Gorilla Pimpin'ses (???)
Killer Mike AND CL Smooth
This infernal battle for the planet of the monkeys has caused me to do something that I never thought I'd do:
Post a James Taylor Song
Well, also, post a Genesis song.
These 3 ROCK!
The Dickies' "You Drive Me Ape (You Big Gorilla)"
Gorilla Biscuits' "Gorilla Biscuits"
Dead Milkmen's "Gorilla GIrl"
And, last, we have The Mopes' "You Look Like A Gorilla"
and Surfin' Gorillas "Go, Go Gorilla."
And one last Kochalka Monkey that somehow eluded capture in any previous posts:
I lack the skillz to embed this but here's the link to Three Brain's "Monkey Salad."
Enjoy!
When it came out in 1967, Mowgli became the first non-caucasian "star" of a Disney animated film.
"I Wanna Be Like You" is written by brothers Robert and Richard Sherman. King Louis the orangutan was voiced by Louis Prima.
"Bare Necessities" was written by Terry Gilkyson and performed by Phil Harris (as Baloo) in the film. It's the only song by Gilkyson that remains in the film after he was fired and the Shermans were brought in to replace him. The version here is performed by Louis Armstrong.
I have another number from Elvis Costello's monkey phase.
Somehow, I let a monkey cover slip in yesterday (The Specials covering Toots & The Maytals' "Monkey Man"), so what the hell, here's Elvis doing another version of "Monkey to Man" and here are a couple of covers of "Shock the Monkey."
Speaking of loose monkeys, does anyone out there have a copy of "Green Monkeys" from Graham Parker's 1990 release Human Soul? I am ashamed that this is a piece of Parkerana that I do not have. And because such a person would be like a GOD to me. ( hint, hint )
