Is nothing sacred???
Now "the man" is trying to mess with my chocolate! Fight the power! DON'T MESS WITH OUR CHOCOLATE!
Chocolate Manufacturers of America (CMA), along with the Grocery Manufacturers Association, have petitioned the FDA to change the current requirements for chocolate. Docket # 2007P-0085 would allow chocolate manufacturers to replace cocoa butter with vegetable fat and whole milk with whey-- both of which are about 1/3 the price. The changes would not be of any health benefit, just a huge money saver for the manufacturers. And, in case you don't know anything about chocolate, it is the cocoa butter and milk fat that give chocolate its creamy, rich qualities.
The DON'T MESS WITH OUR CHOCOLATE campaign is being sponsored by San Francisco chocolatier Guittard. Here are a few articles on the topic: at the LATimes, Confectionary News, and Candyblog.
Tell the FDA and the CMA that THIS IS BULLSHIT! And do it quickly. The deadline for comments is 04/25.
